Study guides, resources and a programme that addresses gaps in essential school subjects is resulting in Matric students from Limpopo Province, achieving great things. The Matric Centre at Marumofase Community High School, in Bochum, geared to focus on helping Matric learners improve their Maths, Science and English results, is finding its mark and proving to be worth all the extra effort that these learners are putting in.
“The programme has impacted positively on our learner’s performance and it is our hope that it will continue to do so in the future. In fact, four of our students attained a Bachelor’s Pass in the September mock exams in Maths, Physical Science and Accounting – we are so proud of them,” exuded Mr Tlhaboloa, a teacher at the Matric Centre.
This academic Matric programme, which is funded as part of Soutpan Solar Power’s Socio Economic Development programme, is designed to fill gaps and supplement what educators are doing on a daily basis. It focuses on the vital three subjects, to equip learners with academic results that will allow further tertiary studies and future careers.
The schools that are targeted in this programme are situated in the rural areas where technology and other basic equipment, such as Physical Science equipment, are not available.
“This centre has really benefited us because we have had access to study guides and other resources that has helped us to improve our marks and given us the opportunity to apply to universities once we finish Matric,” explained matric student, Molatelo Machaka.
Support includes a stipend for retired teachers’, as well as equipment such as laptop computers, study guides and other administrative equipment, as well as a winter school support programme and a Career Expo.
“We also fund transport for learners to and from their schools to the centre to make sure that they don’t miss out,” said Harrisinah Theka, Economic Development Officer for Soutpan Solar Power.
She added, “When it comes to equipping youth for skills in the Fourth Industrial Revolution, these key subjects are what will offer a greater number of career opportunities and jobs”.
